Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies
Guided Hiking and Responsible Hiking
In 2026, Icefall Lodge will be responsible for the hikes which will be led by certified ACMG guides (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides). There will be three guides on each trip. Icefall Lodge is also responsible for the safety on the trails, including but not limited to first aid, wildlife protection (e.g. bear spray), communications and emergency response plans.
Potential hikers are reminded in detail in our registration package that high altitude hiking is strenuous and they need to be fit.
For safety and environmental reasons, the hikes should have no more than 10 hikers and preferably not fewer than 6, but an absolute minimum of 4 hikers.
Hike groups stay together so as not to disturb wildlife but also to alert wildlife to our presence. Within each hike group, hikers stay together to help and watch out for one another in the group.
Hiker’s Responsibility Policy
Backcountry hiking, camping and/or other activities are an individual activity and a group endeavour. A hiker’s individual decisions can affect not only their own enjoyment and safety but also those of the group. For this reason, we ask that each hiker:
(a) Is physically and mentally fit, healthy, properly attired and equipped for backcountry activities in a subalpine and alpine mountain environment (check this website for recommendations for packing).
(b) Honestly and accurately assess themselves in terms of fitness, health and skill, including where appropriate obtaining a prior medical assessment by a physician, in relation to the different difficulty levels of hiking offered each day (easy, medium, strenuous).
(c) Honestly and accurately describe themselves in terms of fitness, medical conditions and required medications as well as any changes to fitness and medical conditions which might affect the hiker’s safe participation. Day hike leaders will conduct a pre-hike briefing that will, among other things, inquire about hiker day pack contents including medications.
Policy on Minor Participation
- The minimum age for participation of a minor child is 8 (eight) years of age.
- In general, the minor child must be directly supervised by the parent or legal guardian at all times. However, subject to the consent of the parent or legal guardian and subject to the prior approval of the Hike Leader a minor over the age of 12 (twelve) may participate in a hike without the direct supervision of the parent or legal guardian.
- The Hike Leader has the sole discretion to refuse participation of a minor, even with direct supervision of a parent or legal guardian, in any activity, based on safety considerations for the minor child and/or other participants.
- The parent or legal guardian shall promptly advise Skyline Hikers, of any changes to the medical condition of the minor child as disclosed on the Registration Form which might reasonably affect the safety and enjoyment of the minor child participating in any activities.
